Additionally, SkillsRI manages the Small Business Resource Hub, designed to provide supportive, coordinated services for small business enterprises, as well as entrepreneurs looking to start and grow their businesses. The Hub provides access to several critical areas such as technical assistance, leadership development, professional services, and support to new and developing small businesses.

Position Summary

The Small Business Legal Counsel will work closely with the VP of Special Projects to provide legal advice to small businesses seeking assistance. The Small Business Legal Counsel will be a member of SkillsRI’s Shared Services team providing assistance to small businesses and aspiring entrepreneurs.

The Small Business Resource Hub aims to facilitate the growth and development of women, veteran, people with disabilities, and minority-owned businesses by supporting small businesses become long-term, qualified entities capable of competing and growing.

Responsibilities

  • Review, draft, and advise small business resource hub employer partners on the terms and conditions of a diverse range of contracts and agreements.
  • Analyze corporate policies and practices to ensure adherence to laws and regulations.
  • Assist small business resource hub employer partners in identifying and navigating legal risk.
  • Formulate legal solutions for small business resource hub employer partners after analyzing legal issues in-depth.
  • Ensure that small business resource hub employer partners comply with current legislation and follow appropriate business policies, procedures, and regulations.
  • Meet with small business resource hub employer partners to gather information pertinent to the legal operation of the business.
  • Maintain legal files and maintain accessibility for the management of information.
  • Keep abreast of legislative changes and trends that may affect small business resource hub employer partners.
  • Assist small business resource hub employer partners through the process of business formation as it pertains to legal compliance.
  • Explain legal language to small business resource hub employer partners in a clear, succinct manner.
  • Provide legal input pertaining to financial planning and reporting process.
  • Apply knowledge of employment laws to resolve conflicts and ensure compliance.
  • Assist and oversee the preparation of vendor contracts for small business resource hub employer partners.
  • Maintain relationships with vendors to be contracted for small businesses; support and ensure vendors are in contractual agreement with the small business(es).
  • Advise small business resource hub employer partners to ensure minimal legal exposure and liability.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • At least two years of related experience (related experience with small businesses desired)
  • Juris doctorate degree from an accredited law school required
  • Rhode Island Bar admission preferred
  • Demonstrated experience working with people of different backgrounds and experiences
  • Bilingual a plus

Compensation

Salary is commensurate with experience.

The Small Business Legal Counsel is a grant-funded position. While not expected, should there be a substantial reduction in funding or should funding cease, this position may be eliminated by SkillsRI.
