Skills for Rhode Island's Future (Skills RI) is recruiting candidates for the Growing Futures Boot Camp, sponsored by the RI Nursery and Landscape Association (RINLA).

PROGRAM TITLE: Growing Futures Boot Camp

START DATE: August 30th 2021

HOURS: 40 hours (1 week)

PAY: $450 stipend

DELIVERY MODE: Paid, in-person, hands-on

WHERE: Arcadia Management Area, Hope Valley, RI

PROGRAM DETAILS

Explore a wide world of employment opportunities Rhode Island’s green industry! Participate in work projects on Rhode Island’s public lands, gaining exposure to skills and topics essential to success in green industry jobs and careers. Plant-based industries are experiencing growing demand for their products and services; throughout 2020 and early 2021, green industry companies have continued to work and have even increased their hiring, with vigilant attention to COVID-19 safety protocols.

The heart of the Growing Futures Boot Camp is hands-on green collar work. Program participants will work for a week in the Arcadia Management Area under the supervision of RINLA staff learning and doing meaningful work to repair and restore public lands including trail restoration, fire road clearing, tree and shrub pruning, and other entry-level forestry and horticulture work.

Upon completion of the program, participants will receive a certificate of completion and job placement assistance including the following:

  • Invitation to a resume-writing workshop
  • Access to RINLA’s members-only job board for nearly 600 member companies
  • Exclusive access to RINLA-member job fairs this summer

LEARNING TOPICS INCLUDE

  • Public land restoration and maintenance
  • Tool use and safety
  • Workplace safety training
  • Introduction to green industries and employment opportunities

YOU MAY BE AN IDEAL CANDIDATE IF YOU MEET THE FOLLOWING CRITERIA

  • You are 18 years of age or older
  • You are able to lift up to 50 pounds
  • You love being outside and engaging with natural materials (plants, soil, wood, stone)
  • You can perform hard, physical work outdoors in summer conditions
  • You have access to reliable transportation
  • You are willing and eager to learn
  • You are enthusiastic and motivated to work in the green industry
