Job Description

As a Direct Support Professional (DSP), you are the “core” of support for people with intellectual or developmental disabilities in all aspects of their daily lives — whether at work, home, or in the community. Your role as a DSP is part of a “career with purpose” that requires knowledge, skills and abilities that make a difference in the lives of the people you support.

DSPs empower individuals to be involved in the management of their own lives, and teach them the skills necessary to attain the dignity that comes with being as fully independent as possible. DSPs are guided by The Code of Ethics from the National Alliance of Direct Support Professionals — and Perspectives Mission, Core Values and Philosophies.


Key Responsibilities:

  • Supports individuals with physical and personal care (e.g., health, grooming, toileting, eating) and self-care needs (e.g., human development, human sexuality), by teaching skills, providing support, and building on individual strengths and capabilities.
  • Maintains confidentiality in all spoken/written/digital communication; adheres to the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA).
  • Assists individuals with household management (e.g. meal prep, shopping, laundry, cleaning, decorating, money management) and with transportation needs to maximize individual skills, abilities and independence.
  • Initiates or assists in the assessment process by gathering information (e.g., participant’s self-assessment and history, additional evaluations), informing individuals about what to expect throughout the assessment process.
  • Recognizes risk and uses positive behavior supports and trauma informed practices to prevent an individual’s crises in a way that meets the individual's needs and personal safety.
  • Identifies the crisis, defuses the situation with trauma informed practices (e.g. Ukeru), evaluates and determines a physical skills intervention strategy, seeking help from staff or behavior health services when needed to resolve a crisis situation.
  • Supports individuals with developing friendships and other relationships.
  • Assists individuals with identifying, securing and using needed equipment (e.g. adaptive equipment) and therapies (e.g., physical, occupational and communication)
  • Supports and promotes healthy living and wellness of individuals (e.g. spiritual, mental, emotional, physical) by empowering them to take an active role in healthcare decisions and actions to maintain good health and well-being.
  • Supports individuals with recruiting and training other professional service providers when needed to support home living.


Successful candidates will have

  • High School Diploma (or GED)
  • Being a Professional
  • Reliable Transportation / Proof of Auto Insurance
  • No more than 2 moving violations within a 3 year period
  • Favorable Criminal Background Check & Monthly OIG Clearances
  • Incorporates sensitivity to diversity, inclusion and equality issues into daily practices and interactions in a positive and professional manner
  • Being Person-Centered
